Iowa Lowers Flags for WWII POW Sailor Shove, Buried 82 Years After His Death
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds ordered all public buildings in the state to fly flags at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Nov. 7 in honor of Iowa sailor Robert Shove, a U.S. Navy seaman first class who died as a prisoner of war in World War II. Shove's funeral was held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 7 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel in Sioux City, followed by a military burial at Memorial Park Cemetery at noon and a remembrance gathering at the Sioux City Public Museum from 2 to 5 p.m.
Shove was born in 1922 in Washta, Iowa, enlisted in the U.S. Navy at Des Moines, and served aboard USS Canopus in the Pacific theater. He died at age 21 while held at the Cabanatuan POW camp on Luzon in the Philippines. His remains were identified in 2025, more than 82 years after his death. The governor's office said the half-staff order applies to the State Capitol and all flags in the Capitol complex, as well as all public buildings, grounds and facilities statewide.
In her order, Governor Reynolds said Iowa honors Shove's sacrifice and pays tribute to all Iowa service members who died for their country. Sioux City officials said the remembrance event is open to the public and welcomed residents to the museum to honor the young sailor who finally came home after more than eight decades.
