Jackson City Council Meeting Derails Over Councilman's Slur, Rescheduled to November 5
The Jackson City Council meeting in Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi, was interrupted on November 3 after Councilman Kenneth Stokes used an insulting slur toward a woman in the chamber; calls of 'kick him out' rose from the floor, members voted 4-3 to recess for an hour, and the meeting was ultimately postponed. The dispute followed Stokes's introduction of two controversial ordinances, one renaming a segment of Medgar Evers Boulevard to honor Kohen Wiley, a slain child from Senatobia, and another repealing Jackson's data center moratorium. Many residents were already unhappy about meeting on Election Day and opposed both measures, heightening tensions.
Opponents of the data center measure questioned whether the council was moving too quickly to lift the moratorium before related regulations are finished. Earlier, in September, 90 residents had signed a petition seeking discipline over Stokes's conduct toward residents at a prior meeting, including censure and a fine. After the one-hour recess, members returned and rescheduled the meeting for 10 a.m. on November 5. The episode again put council decorum and public participation in the spotlight: residents want a full voice in decisions on street names and major project rules, and the conduct of elected members in public meetings is itself under public scrutiny.
